Every one of us carries emotional baggage.
It’s invisible, but it can be incredibly heavy. It can shape how we see ourselves, how we interact with the world, our relationships, our emotional state and even the way we respond to situations without always understanding why.
And because we carry it for so long, sometimes it can start to feel normal.
The Gap I Noticed as a Counsellor
At Relight Counselling, I’ve had the privilege of supporting women as they begin to understand themselves, their past experiences and the things that may have shaped the way they think, feel and behave.
Through this work, I realised there is often a gap between professional help and the beginning of someone’s healing journey.
There are many reasons for this.
Some people may not be able to afford counselling. Some may not really understand what counselling is or what it involves. Others may simply not feel ready to sit down with a counsellor and begin exploring deeply personal experiences.
And that’s okay.
I wanted to create something that could help bridge that gap.
Creating a Foundation for Understanding Yourself
The Unpack Book Series was created to provide a foundation for understanding yourself and the emotional baggage you may be carrying.
The first book focuses on understanding your past and beginning to recognise how your experiences can shape you.
Most of us have things from childhood and throughout our lives that have stayed with us. Experiences, beliefs, emotions and ways of coping can become part of who we are without us necessarily stopping to question where they came from.
The books are an opportunity to begin looking at those things.
To understand them.
To make sense of them.
And, ultimately, to begin making positive changes.
What Does It Mean to “Unpack” Your Emotional Baggage?
For me, the word unpack is really important.
We often carry emotional baggage around with us without even realising how heavy it has become.
It isn’t visible to other people, but it can affect almost every part of our lives.
It can influence what we believe about ourselves, how we respond emotionally, how we interact with others and the way we experience the world around us.
And unfortunately, many people never get the opportunity to really unpack it.
The Unpack Book Series is about giving yourself permission to take a closer look at what you’re carrying.
To understand where some of that weight comes from.
And to begin taking steps towards taking that weight off your shoulders.
The Books Aren’t a Replacement for Counselling
Something that is really important to me is making the distinction between self-help and counselling.
The Unpack Book Series can provide a strong foundation for understanding yourself, but it isn’t a replacement for working with a qualified counsellor or trained professional.
Counselling allows us to go much deeper.
It provides the opportunity to explore and process experiences together, with the support of someone who is trained to help you navigate that process safely.
I genuinely believe that having a strong understanding of yourself can be incredibly valuable, but there are times when one-to-one support is needed to really process what you have been through.
That is why I see The Unpack Book Series as a bridge.
A starting point when someone needs it.
A way of beginning to understand yourself before, alongside or in preparation for deeper work with a qualified counsellor.
Who Is The Unpack Book Series For?
The first book in the series is really suitable for most people because we all have a past.
We all have experiences that have shaped us.
And most of us carry some form of emotional baggage, whether we recognise it or not.
You don’t have to be in crisis to benefit from understanding yourself more deeply.
You may simply be curious about why you think or feel the way you do.
You may recognise patterns in your relationships.
You may find yourself reacting in ways you don’t fully understand.
Or you may simply feel that there are things from your past that you have never really had the opportunity to explore.
The books provide a place to start.
What I Hope The Unpack Book Series Gives You
More than anything, I hope the books help people realise the importance of unpacking their emotional baggage.
It makes me sad that so many of us carry this invisible weight around with us for years, sometimes for our entire lives, without ever being given the opportunity to understand it.
We don’t have to simply accept that weight as part of who we are.
Understanding ourselves can give us the opportunity to see things differently, make positive reframes and begin making positive changes.
And sometimes, that first step is simply becoming curious about what we are carrying.
Taking the Weight Off Your Shoulders
The Unpack Book Series was created because I believe we all deserve the opportunity to understand ourselves more deeply.
To look at our past.
To understand how it has shaped us.
And to begin taking the weight off our shoulders.
For some people, the books may be the starting point they need.
For others, they may be a bridge towards counselling when they feel ready.
Either way, my hope is that The Unpack Book Series encourages more people to recognise the importance of unpacking their emotional baggage; because we shouldn’t have to carry that invisible weight forever.
Sometimes, we just need the opportunity to unpack it.
