A Single Mother’s Silent Struggle “What Will They Think of Me????”

Becoming a mother is life-changing, beautiful, emotional, and at times, overwhelming.

For single Mums, these emotions can feel even more intense. Raising a child alone doesn’t just bring the usual parenting challenges, it also comes with unique pressures that can leave you feeling isolated and stretched too thin.

We’ve all heard the phrase, “It takes a village to raise a child.” But for single mums, that village often feels absent. Society tends to expect us to juggle everything on our own, while also holding us to impossible standards. This pressure to appear strong and capable can make asking for help, especially psychological support, feel like an impossible step.

I know this because I’ve been there.

My Story My son was born with medical conditions.  Without a diagnosis at birth, I was consumed with worry. Instead of enjoying those early moments of connection, I was overwhelmed by fear of the unknown. Over the years, my son received additional diagnoses and underwent multiple surgeries. Each one was emotionally draining.

As a single mum, I didn’t just face these challenges, I faced them alone. Every decision, every worry, fell solely on my shoulders. I convinced myself I had to handle everything on my own. When I finally realised I needed support, I hesitated.

I thought, “What will they think of me? A single Mum needing psychological help? That must look bad, right????”

But the truth is, my struggles weren’t because I was a single mum, they were because I was a parent navigating tough, emotional challenges. Being a single mum heightened those struggles, but it didn’t make them any less valid.

We come to therapy as people, not labels.

Therapy isn’t a big deal, it’s a practical tool to help you feel more like yourself again.

Therapy isn’t about judgement; it’s about creating space for you to work through what’s on your mind. Counsellors are trained to be non-judgemental and supportive, helping you process your emotions and find clarity.

Single Mums

To any single parent reading this : If you ever feel like you need psychological support, don’t let stigma stop you. Counselling isn’t about judgement, it’s about helping you navigate life’s challenges and rediscover your strength.
