In business, reviews are often seen as the gold standard of social proof. When we consider a product or service, we usually check reviews to make an informed decision. Therapy, however, is different.
I’ve had therapy myself, I know what it feels like to sit in that chair as a client. This personal experience has shaped my views on social proof.
Therapy is never something to be ashamed of, one aim of my book Unpack Your Emotional Baggage is to break the stigma around it, but for many it’s often deeply personal (it was for me).
No one should feel obligated to share their journey. My own experience has taught me to honour this personal space, which is why I choose not to ask clients for reviews. Of course, if someone wants to share their experience of their own accord, that’s entirely up to them, but I don’t encourage it for therapy.
For a while, I did consider asking for reviews because I want to grow my business and I know how important they can be. But I can’t go against my values. Honouring the deeply personal nature of therapy will always come first for me,
In my book, Unpack Your Emotional Baggage, I explore how therapy works and why it’s so valuable, especially for mums. Therapy shouldn’t be stigmatised. For mums, engaging in therapy is one of the most powerful things we can do, not just for ourselves but for our children as well.
My book gives you a real feel for my approach. Even without reviews, you can understand the impact of my method and how I work with clients. It’s perfect for anyone who wants to understand therapy, whether they’re considering it or unsure what to expect.
Instead of asking for therapy reviews, I focus on feedback that aligns with my values.
For example, I’m offering a giveaway of my book in my Mums group, in exchange of a honest book review. Simply comment the word “values” in the group for a chance to win one of five copies.
This way, I can still grow my business while staying true to my values, honouring the deeply personal nature of therapy, and celebrating the transformative impact it can have.
